Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players, forming fixed partnerships with partners sitting opposite each other. The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, featuring eight cards in each of the traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card hierarchy in each suit ranks from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks that contain high-value cards.
The scoring system breaks down like this:
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points
This totals to 28 points from the cards. In some versions, an additional point is awarded for winning the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which explains the game's name. However, many modern players do not count the last trick's point, yet the game retains its name, 29, even when played with only 28 points.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full 52-card deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player receives a set of these cards, one of each suit. Meanwhile, the Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
