Beginner’s Guide for Dead Sails
-------------------------------Screenshot by The Escapist. If Dead Sails is new to you, don't worry—it's surprisingly straightforward. Your mission? Captain a ship, sail in a straight line for 10 thousand meters between towns, and ultimately reach the 100k meter goal. Keep moving, maintain your fuel, and stay alive. Sounds simple, right?
Before You Set Sail
The in-game lobby before starting your journey is your first stop. As a new player, you start with 15 Dabloons, the game's currency. It's not much, but it's enough to buy essentials. While boats are tempting, they're expensive and not necessary for beginners. Instead of splurging on bandages and weapons, which you'll find plenty of in-game, consider your options carefully.
How To Choose A Class
Screenshot by The Escapist. We recommend spending your 15 Dabloons on a class. These are in-game perks you buy from a loot box, costing 3 Dabloons each. You might get lucky and snag a class you enjoy right away. Dead Sails offers solid Common and Uncommon classes like Pirate and Gunslinger. Your choice depends on your play style. Check out our Dead Sails Class Tierlist for a detailed breakdown.
What To Do In Towns
Screenshot by The Escapist. When you start a round, you'll find yourself in a town where your ship is docked. These towns appear every 10 thousand meters and are your safe havens. Here's what you can do:
- Trading Hut: Sell collected items.
- General Store: Stock up on useful items.
- Hospital: Heal up.
- Gun Shop: Buy guns and ammo.
- Sheriff’s: Earn bounty money from pirate and creature corpses.
Starting with a blunt weapon, there's no rush to buy a firearm. Instead, prioritize buying coal. Spend all your money on as much coal as you can; fuel is crucial because the game ends if your ship can't move.
Dead Sails Tips & Tricks
----------------------------The gameplay is simple, but you'll encounter various buildings and structures, and fend off undead creatures. Here's what you need to know to master Dead Sails.
Tips For Never Running Out Of Fuel
Screenshot by The Escapist. In Dead Sails, coal is king. Each piece adds 20 percent more fuel to your tank, and theoretically, buying 5 pieces in every town could see you through to the end. But where's the fun in that?
You'll find various collectible items off-ship, many marked as "fuel" when you hover over them. These give a 5 percent boost. The most efficient way to fuel up, aside from coal, is by using undead corpses. Kill everything that attacks you, and don't forget to store their bodies in your inventory for fuel.
How To Survive The Night
Screenshot by The Escapist. Nighttime in Dead Sails is tougher, with lower visibility. If you die, it's game over.
Ideally, spend the night in town for safety. If that's not possible, buy Barbed Wire beforehand. Mounting it on your ship keeps mobs at bay. Without Barbed Wire, pause your journey and attack any creature that approaches.
Which Weapon To Choose
Screenshot by The Escapist. Weapon choice is personal. If you prefer melee, stick with the starting hammer or pickaxe. As you encounter stronger enemies, you'll need more powerful weapons.
A shotgun is a top pick due to its high damage output, perfect for unexpected encounters. Early on, a revolver is a good choice. It's weaker but helps you get accustomed to firearms and can often be found in buildings.
Best Items To Collect
Screenshot by The Escapist. Everything you collect can be sold, starting with junk that fetches 3 or 5 cash per item. However, your sack inventory is limited to 10 items, so choose wisely. Here are key items to focus on:
- Moyai and Bars: Available in diamond, gold, and silver, these are lucrative.
- Healing Packs: Keep these for emergencies, though they can be sold.
- Crosses: Sell for 35 cash or use against undead.
- Weapons: Use or sell as needed.
- Robot Head: Found in houses and banks, sells for 45 cash.
- Holy Water: Found in churches, sells for 25 cash.
- Gold Llama: A rare and valuable item, sells for 150 cash.
Remember, you can stack items on your boat, but they'll fall off if not welded. Place an item and press the weld button (Z on the keyboard) to secure it.
And that's the beginner's guide to Dead Sails! Follow these tips, and you'll become the best captain to ever sail the seas—or in this case, the small, canal-like river. For an extra boost, check out our Dead Sails codes.
