Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with creator Yuji Horii assuring fans that information will be unveiled gradually. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This update follows a May 2024 announcement regarding the passing of key figures in the Dragon Quest franchise: character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The series' lead producer, Yu Miyake, had also previously transitioned to lead Square Enix's mobile game division.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a prolonged silence had sparked concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's latest comments effectively quell these anxieties, confirming Dragon Quest XII's ongoing development.
Announced as part of the franchise's 35th anniversary, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
