Two classic GBA racing games from Nintendo's F-Zero franchise are speeding onto the Switch Online + Expansion Pack!
F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend Join Switch Online
Launching October 11, 2024
Nintendo's announcement today confirms the arrival of F-Zero: GP Legend and the previously Japan-exclusive F-Zero Climax to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack on October 11th.
The F-Zero series, a futuristic high-speed racing franchise, debuted in Japan over three decades ago (1990). Critically acclaimed, it's influenced other racing titles, notably SEGA's Daytona USA. Known for pushing the boundaries of console technology, F-Zero games were renowned for their breakneck speed on SNES and beyond.
Like Mario Kart, F-Zero features intense racing, track obstacles, and competitive battles between racers' customized "F-Zero machines." The series' iconic protagonist, Captain Falcon, is also a prominent fighter in Super Smash Bros.
F-Zero: GP Legend initially launched in Japan in 2003, followed by a global release in 2004. F-Zero Climax, released in Japan in 2004, remained region-locked until now, marking a 19-year gap before the recent release of F-Zero 99 on Switch. In an interview, F-Zero designer Takaya Imamura cited Mario Kart's popularity as a contributing factor to the F-Zero series' extended hiatus.
The October 2024 Switch Online + Expansion Pack update grants subscribers access to both F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend, offering Grand Prix, story modes, and various time trials. Prepare for intense competition!
