Google Streamer 4K Price Drops for First Time

Author : Claire May 01,2025

The Google Streamer 4K is currently on sale for the first time ever, available for just $79.99 on Amazon and other retailers. This Android-based 4K streaming device stands out as one of the best options on the market, offering a compelling alternative to pricier competitors like the Apple TV, Roku Ultra, and Nvidia Shield TV Pro. With its smart hub functionality and Thread compatibility, the Google Streamer 4K delivers a robust set of features at a more affordable price point.

Launched in September 2024, the Google Streamer 4K is the successor to the Chromecast 4K and boasts significant improvements. Google claims the new processor is up to 22% faster, with double the memory at 2GB and quadruple the onboard storage at 32GB. It supports both high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi and gigabit ethernet connectivity. The device is powered via a USB Type-C port, making it easier to find a replacement power brick if needed. Additionally, if you misplace the newly redesigned remote, a convenient remote-finder button is located on the main unit.

The Google Streamer 4K supports streaming at up to 4K resolution in HDR, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. Despite featuring an HDMI 2.1 port, it's limited to 4K at 60fps. It also supports Dolby Atmos for spatial audio when paired with compatible speakers like the Sonos Arc. Beyond streaming, the device can control your smart home devices and serves as both a Thread border router and Matter hub.

Compared to the Apple TV and Roku Ultra, the Google Streamer 4K offers similar capabilities at a lower price. While the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max is cheaper, the Android TV interface on the Google Streamer 4K is cleaner and more intuitive, free from Amazon ads. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro, though superior in some streaming aspects, is priced at $200. With its added smart home functionality and Matter and Thread compatibility, the Google Streamer 4K presents an exceptional value.

Which streaming services should I sign up for?

If you're looking to try out streaming services before committing, consider the free trials offered by Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and Crunchyroll. These trials allow you to explore a variety of content before deciding on a paid subscription.

For those interested in a paid subscription, the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle is a fantastic deal at just $16.99 for all three services. Disney Plus alone offers a vast array of high-quality content, from classic Disney animations to the latest Marvel and Star Wars series, and excellent kids' programming like Bluey. With the upcoming release of season 2 of Andor on April 22, Disney Plus continues to be a top choice for diverse and engaging viewing options.
