Rockstar Games' latest release, Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, has not been well-received on Steam since its launch in early March. Despite the addition of sought-after features and improvements, the game has garnered a 'mixed' user review rating, with only 54% of the 19,772 user reviews being positive. This rating starkly contrasts with the original GTA 5 on Steam, which holds a 'very positive' rating but is no longer listed due to Rockstar's request. Interestingly, GTA 5 Enhanced has the lowest user review score among all GTA titles on Steam, even falling below Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which sits at 66% positive reviews.
GTA 5 Enhanced offers a free upgrade to PC players, introducing features like Hao’s Special Works for the latest vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership. It also boasts enhanced graphics and faster loading times. Existing GTA 5 PC owners can freely upgrade and migrate their Story Mode and Online progress. However, many players are facing significant issues with account migration, which has fueled much of the negative feedback. Players have reported receiving messages such as, "The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time," leading to frustration and disappointment.
Some players have expressed strong dissatisfaction, with one stating, "If you think I'm throwing away nearly 700 hours of gameplay on one character so that you can make a few more bucks off me, then you can lick my anal orifice clean. This is an objective downgrade from the 'old' version. Gonna pretend this was never released and continue to enjoy Legacy version until the new game comes out when I'm 60." Another player noted the arbitrary nature of account migration restrictions and the lack of help from Rockstar's support team, saying, "I'm leaving a negative review mainly due to Rockstar deciding that some accounts should arbitrarily not be able to migrate, and if you ask for help from support, they just say they can't do anything about it."
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced has maintained a strong player base, achieving a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 on Steam since its launch. However, the rocky release has raised concerns among PC gamers about the upcoming PC launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, especially since GTA 6 is set to launch in the fall of 2025 exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. A former Rockstar developer attempted to soothe PC gamers' concerns in December 2023, urging them to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its launch strategy.
In related news, Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has filed a lawsuit against online marketplace PlayerAuctions, claiming it hosts "thousands of listings for unauthorized, infringing GTA 5 content – including heavily modified player accounts, in-game assets, and virtual currency – all gained by using hacking software, cheats, and technical exploits." Additionally, Rockstar has recently acquired Video Games Deluxe, the developer behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, and renamed it Rockstar Australia.
