In 2025, Marvel Comics is set to launch one of its most ambitious projects yet with Imperial, a new series helmed by the visionary writer Jonathan Hickman. Known for his transformative works like House of X and the new Ultimate Universe, Hickman is poised to revolutionize the cosmic landscape of the Marvel Universe, impacting characters such as Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Hickman shared that the inception of Imperial was a timely decision, driven by a desire to refresh Marvel’s cosmic corner. "I think it was simply time to revisit this corner of the Marvel Universe," he stated. "With my availability and interest aligning with Marvel's ongoing focus on this area, and the recent success of the Ultimate line, it felt like the perfect opportunity to launch Imperial. It’s come together wonderfully, and I believe fans will find it a thrilling read."
Drawing parallels with the successful relaunch of the Ultimate line, Hickman discussed how similar strategies are being applied to Imperial. "There's a direct line between the two in terms of what we believe can succeed in the current market," he explained. "A concise series of books allows readers to engage deeply without feeling overwhelmed, and it enables creators to realize their vision for each title without being bogged down by extensive continuity."
However, Hickman clarified that Imperial differs from the Ultimate line as it does not take place in an alternate universe, thus avoiding the 'real time' narrative approach. This shift, he believes, will be welcomed by many fans.
While Imperial may evoke memories of 2006’s Annihilation crossover, Hickman emphasized that the two are fundamentally different. "Annihilation was an invasion story, whereas Imperial isn't anything like that," he noted. "The outcome might be similar in boosting interest in Marvel’s cosmic books, but in terms of plot and story, they are distinct."
Hickman's previous works at Marvel, such as the "Hunt for Xavier" crossover, have set the stage for Imperial. Elements like the resurrection of the former Shi’ar Empress Lilandra and the introduction of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda are woven into the fabric of this new series. Yet, Hickman pointed out that Imperial is not just a continuation of his previous narratives. "I'm known for integrating my own continuity within the larger Marvel Universe, but more than half of Imperial is inspired by various stories told by other creators over the years," he revealed.
Additionally, Imperial marks a cosmic return for the Hulk family, revisiting the war-torn world of Sakaar, reminiscent of the iconic Planet Hulk storyline. Hickman teased that this revisit coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Planet Hulk, hinting at significant developments.
The series will be visually brought to life by artists Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello. Hickman praised their contributions, saying, "Both of those guys are crushing it. They’ve handled the story beats, character designs, and exotic locations brilliantly. With the compressed publishing schedule, having them work together was essential, and they complement each other perfectly."
Imperial #1 is scheduled for release on June 4, 2025.
