Paramount Pictures has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will zoom onto the big screen on March 19, 2027. Variety reports the release date, giving fans a two-year wait until the blue blur returns to theaters. No other details about the film have been revealed at this time.
This sequel is hardly surprising, given the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in $218 million domestically and over $420 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing the impressive $148 million earned by the first film. This success is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design, which underwent significant changes during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, a testament to the enduring rivalry between Nintendo and Sega, now playing out on the silver screen.
The live-action *Sonic* franchise continues to expand, now boasting three feature films and a *Knuckles* spin-off streaming series. Based on the beloved Sega video game franchise, the films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he battles his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each installment has introduced more iconic characters, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with *Sonic 3* finally bringing in Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves). While Sonic 3 hinted at the next character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a secret for now.
