The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and popularity, the question of whether a new iteration will replace the original, leaving current players behind, is a major concern.

Rockstar's decision to prioritize GTA Online over story DLC for GTA 5 highlights the game's financial success. However, this prioritization has also fueled anxieties among players who have invested significant time and money into the current version. Will their progress be rendered obsolete with the arrival of a potential "GTA Online 2"?

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this concern in a recent interview, drawing a parallel to the company's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online and its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2, coexisted successfully, allowing players of the original to continue playing without losing their progress.

Zelnick stated, while not explicitly confirming details about a new GTA Online, that Take-Two generally supports its properties as long as players remain engaged. He used the NBA 2K Online example to illustrate this point, emphasizing that both versions remain available, serving a large player base. He concluded by saying, "So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 might not necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could lead to Rockstar continuing its support.

However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially considering the anticipated Fall 2025 release, potentially after Borderlands 4's September launch. Until then, the future of GTA Online remains somewhat uncertain, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for those invested in the current iteration.
