Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, right from the UK with AuroraWatch UK. This stunning natural phenomenon can grace the night skies of Britain, and once witnessed, it leaves an indelible mark on your memory. AuroraWatch UK serves as your essential tool for monitoring geomagnetic activity, alerting you when there's a possibility of catching a glimpse of the aurora from the UK.
Stay updated with alerts that notify you of increases in geomagnetic activity. These alerts are triggered whenever the AuroraWatch status level changes, providing you with real-time information on the likelihood of witnessing an aurora in the UK. You can also check the current alert status and review the recent history of the past 24 hours. For more detailed predictions, a 30-minute forecast model from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is available.
Should you encounter any issues, feel free to reach out via email at [email protected].
Important Notes:
- Aurora Watch is not a forecasting app but rather an alert system based on real-time geomagnetic data.
- Be aware that phone settings like Battery Saver can restrict push notifications, potentially reducing or preventing aurora alerts. Ensure your phone's settings allow notifications from Aurora Watch UK by checking Settings/Notifications/App settings.
- The app does not send historical alerts. If your phone is off or lacks internet connectivity during an increase in status that subsequently decreases before the next data update, you won't receive an alert.
- There is an intentional delay in sending alerts as recommended by Lancaster University to allow the data to stabilize.
- Alerts are primarily based on data from Lancaster University's Lancaster magnetometer, though other magnetometers, like the one in Shetland, are part of their network. This approach might make alerts slightly more conservative, especially for those in England, compared to those further north where auroras are more frequently visible.
- The Aurora Watch UK app for Android is developed and maintained by Smallbouldering Projects and is not an official app. The alert data is provided by Lancaster University, utilizing data from the SAMNET and/or AuroraWatchNet magnetometer networks.
