Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors Surface: Major Storage Boost Unveiled

Leaked GameStop SKUs Suggest Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support microSD Express Cards

Recent leaks suggest the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will feature significant storage improvements, utilizing microSD Express cards. This advancement represents a substantial upgrade from the UHS-I standard used in the original Switch.

The leak originates from several GameStop stock keeping units (SKUs) for purported Switch 2 accessories, initially shared on Reddit. These SKUs list "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" options in 256GB and 512GB capacities, strongly indicating microSD Express compatibility.

A Quantum Leap in Transfer Speeds and Capacity

The difference between UHS-I and microSD Express is dramatic. UHS-I cards offer theoretical maximum transfer speeds around 104 MB/s, practically reaching approximately 95 MB/s. In contrast, microSD Express cards boast speeds nearing 985 MB/s – a staggering 900% increase. This improvement is attributed to the microSD Express standard's use of the NVMe protocol, similar to high-performance SSDs.

Capacity also sees a massive boost. While UHS-I cards max out at 2TB, microSD Express supports cards up to 128TB – a 6300% increase. The leaked GameStop pricing suggests a 256GB card will retail for $49.99, and a 512GB card for $84.99.

Further Leaks and Nintendo's Timeline

The leak also includes SKUs for Switch 2 carrying cases, priced at $19.99 and $29.99. While these are likely unofficial accessories, their appearance alongside the microSD Express SKUs adds weight to the speculation. Nintendo has previously stated an intention to officially unveil the Switch 2 before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025), leaving a limited window for the official announcement.

Comparison Table: UHS-I vs. microSD Express

Feature UHS-I microSD Express
Transfer Speed ~95 MB/s ~985 MB/s
Max Capacity 2TB 128TB

The leaked information paints a picture of a Switch 2 with significantly enhanced storage capabilities, promising faster loading times and greater game storage potential. However, official confirmation from Nintendo is still awaited.
