Smash Bros. Dating App Faces Legal Action

Author : Peyton May 18,2025

Smash Together, a unique dating platform designed for fans of the Super Smash Bros. series to connect and socialize, announced it has been hit with a cease-and-desist order just before its planned open beta launch. The app, which was set to go live on May 15 after months of development, shared the unfortunate news on May 13 via a tweet featuring a disheartened Yoshi meme, captioned "We got cease and desisted."

Although the developers did not disclose the source of the legal action, speculation points to Nintendo as the likely sender, given the app's focus on their Super Smash Bros. franchise. SmashTogether marketed itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," promising to help users find their "dream Doubles partner (in and out of Smash)" through a specialized matchmaking algorithm designed to pair users with their perfect "Smash Partner."

The app's interface, as shown in promotional screenshots, featured sections for users to list their favorite character or "main," as well as to highlight their notable tournament victories and engage with Smash-themed prompts. For instance, one prompt read, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."

Beyond potential intellectual property and copyright concerns, the concept of a dating app centered around a game like Super Smash Bros. might have been a contributing factor to the issuance of the cease-and-desist. As of now, there has been no official statement from the SmashTogether team regarding plans to pivot to a different concept that does not leverage the Smash Bros. IP. In the meantime, we continue to respect the developers' situation and refrain from making light-hearted "smashing" puns.
