Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and character-packed kart racers of the year — and for good reason. With a bold roster that spans multiple franchises and generations, Sega is clearly aiming to dominate the genre with a title that celebrates not just Sonic’s legacy, but the broader pop culture landscape.

The recent addition of SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star in the Patty Wagon, racing across the vibrant Bikini Bottom track, is a stroke of pure nostalgia and fun. The Nickelodeon tie-in isn’t just a gimmick — it’s a full-throated celebration of animation, humor, and underwater chaos, all rendered in the game’s slick, stylized visuals. The fact that the Patty Wagon is a literal Krabby Patty with a racing engine? Chef’s kiss. It's exactly the kind of absurd, joyful energy fans expect from both Sonic and SpongeBob.

But Sega isn’t stopping there. The Minecraft trio (Steve, Alex, and the Creeper) bring a blocky, pixelated charm that contrasts delightfully with the sleeker Sega characters. Then there’s Joker from Persona 5, adding a stylish, edgy flair to the roster, and Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza — a surprising but welcome nod to Sega’s deep roots in narrative-driven action games.

And with the Digital Deluxe Edition’s Season Pass, players get access to:

  • Nickelodeon content (SpongeBob, Patrick, and more)
  • Minecraft characters, vehicles, and tracks
  • Characters from Sonic Prime (including the new alternate-universe versions of Sonic and his allies)
  • Two yet-to-be-announced collaborations — rumored to include Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which would explain the teaser hints.

The game’s promise of over 100 playable characters — including base and DLC — makes it a true celebration of cross-franchise fun. It’s a direct challenge to Mario Kart World, which has so far stuck to Nintendo’s own universe. In contrast, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds embraces chaos, creativity, and a massive roster — a full-on "anything goes" approach that feels fresh and exciting.

IGN’s hands-on impression — calling the game “a fantastic feel” and praising its drifting mechanics and responsive controls — bodes well. If the gameplay lives up to the hype, this could be the most fun and frenetic racing game on the Switch 2.

With a September release date confirmed for both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the stage is set for a true Mario vs. Sonic showdown — but this time, it’s not just about two hedgehogs. It’s about Sonic, SpongeBob, Joker, Steve, and even the Creeper all on the same track, tearing up the asphalt (or the sea floor, or the blocky Minecraft overworld).

In short: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds isn’t just a kart racer — it’s a multiversal party, and everyone’s invited.
