Earlier this month, Sega confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will feature guest characters including Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza series, Joker from Persona 5, and even Steve, Alex, and the Creeper from Minecraft. But the crossover roster doesn't end there. Sega has now announced a Nickelodeon collaboration that brings SpongeBob SquarePants to the race track — and teased that characters from Avatar and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will join later.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a kart racer filled with Sega's iconic characters, celebrating the company's legacy. To further expand the lineup, high-profile guest characters are being added. Players who purchase the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Digital Deluxe Edition will receive the Season Pass. This pass includes the Nickelodeon content, the recently revealed Minecraft characters, vehicles, and tracks, characters from the Netflix series Sonic Prime, and two more unannounced collaborations.
The trailer below showcases SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star racing in the Patty Wagon — a vehicle shaped like a Krabby Patty from the show — on the Bikini Bottom track, the primary setting of the SpongeBob SquarePants series.
Sega has stated that CrossWorlds will feature a massive roster of over playable characters when including DLC. Expected mainstays like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Shadow, and Tails are all confirmed, and now they'll be joined by the likes of SpongeBob SquarePants.
CrossWorlds is set to compete directly with the Switch 2 exclusive kart racer Mario Kart World, which has so far avoided adding guest characters from outside Nintendo's universe. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is scheduled for release on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, setting the stage for a classic Mario vs. Sonic racing rivalry when Sega's title launches in September.
IGN recently had hands-on time with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and was impressed. "It has a fantastic feel," we noted, "one that I enjoyed and look forward to drifting through."
