Former Diablo developers are creating a groundbreaking new ARPG. Moon Beast Productions, a studio founded by industry veterans, has secured funding for this innovative project. However, competing with established giants like Diablo and Path of Exile 2 will be a significant challenge.
The creators of the original Diablo and Diablo II are developing a low-budget action RPG aiming to redefine the genre. Given the immense popularity and influence of the original Diablo games (the first selling over 2.5 million copies and the sequel over 15 million), this new project has high potential.
Diablo, released in 1997, was a massive success, profoundly impacting the ARPG landscape and spawning countless imitators. Its sequel, Diablo II (2000), further cemented the franchise's legacy as one of the most influential and successful game series ever created.
Industry veterans Phil Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer formed Moon Beast Productions and secured $4.5 million to develop their revolutionary ARPG. Their goal is to move beyond traditional ARPG design, focusing on smarter development rather than sheer scale. Chief Creative Director Erich Schaefer reveals the team’s 20-year ambition to create a more open and dynamic ARPG, aiming to recapture the essence of the early Diablo games. While details are scarce, the team's expertise ensures high expectations.
Diablo 1 and 2 Creators Tackle New ARPG with Limited Budget
Breaking into the competitive ARPG market will be tough. Diablo IV's recent expansion, Vessel of Hatred, was extremely popular, demonstrating the existing franchise's strong fanbase. Competing directly with Diablo, alongside other successful titles like Path of Exile 2, presents a considerable hurdle. Path of Exile 2's recent Steam launch saw a peak player count exceeding 538,000, ranking 15th all-time on the platform and receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews (87 on OpenCritic). Moon Beast Productions hopes their ARPG will achieve similar success and advance the genre.
