The upcoming Narnia reboot, penned and directed by Greta Gerwig of Barbie fame, has added Carey Mulligan to its expanding ensemble.
That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, which confirms Mulligan’s role alongside Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey from Sex Education, and Hollywood icon Meryl Streep.
Gerwig will once again take on dual roles as writer and director for her fresh interpretation of C.S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia.
The new film will adapt the series’ prequel novel, The Magician’s Nephew, set before the events of the original and most iconic Narnia tale, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.Mulligan, who has earned widespread acclaim and multiple award nominations including Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, is slated to portray Mabel Kirke, the mother of the book’s young protagonist, Digory.
Daniel Craig will play the film’s titular magician and Digory’s uncle. Emma Mackey will portray a younger version of Narnia’s malevolent White Witch, while Meryl Streep will lend her voice to Aslan, the series’ divine, talking lion.
This isn’t the first time Narnia has graced the big screen. A trilogy released between 2005 and 2010 adapted the first three books from C.S. Lewis’s series: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Those films starred Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan.
Gerwig’s new vision for Narnia marks her first major project since 2023’s Barbie, which became an unexpected box office phenomenon. The film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, received eight Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Song.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is currently scheduled for release in 2026.
