Screenwriter and producer Jeremy Slater has expressed his enthusiasm for Mortal Kombat 2, calling it "far funnier and more expansive" than its predecessor.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Slater detailed the challenge of incorporating a roster of 20 iconic fighters into Mortal Kombat 2. The film, scheduled for release on October 24, 2025, stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
Slater explained, “There’s always a risk of these projects ballooning into three- or four-hour epics, so we had to be strategic in streamlining the narrative. We focused on the core emotional journey and the storylines the audience is most invested in.”
“Our goal was to ensure that the pivotal moments—the fights, fatalities, unexpected twists, and character deaths—are impactful and deliver the satisfaction fans are looking for. We’re confident we hit the mark, thanks to the industry’s top stunt team and an incredible cast. This film is both funnier and grander in scale than the first.”
Slater also shared his experience at test screenings, which he said were filled with Mortal Kombat enthusiasts who responded to the movie with the same exhilaration he felt watching Avengers: Endgame.
“I can’t wait for audiences to see the film,” he remarked. “It’s been completed for some time, and we’ve been waiting for the ideal release window. Attending those test screenings and seeing the fans’ reactions—cheering, leaping from their seats, laughing at every joke—was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. That’s the magic we strive for in this industry.”

In March, fans got their first glimpse of several new characters joining the Mortal Kombat 2 cast, including Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. They join returning star Hiroyuki Sanada, who reprises his role as Scorpion.
There has been much anticipation around Karl Urban's live-action portrayal of the egocentric Hollywood star, especially after a fictional movie poster featuring his character was released.
The Mortal Kombat 2 footage shows a clean-shaven Urban sporting Johnny Cage’s signature hairstyle and sunglasses, striking a classic martial arts stance. The shot also features Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade in the background.
Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat at NetherRealm Studios, commented on Johnny Cage’s role in the sequel: “His entry into the Mortal Kombat universe is a central theme of this film. He’s a faded Hollywood actor thrust into this mystical, hyper-violent world. Karl brings a unique interpretation to the role—it’s fresh and carries a certain novelty.”
Boon hinted that Johnny Cage’s introduction will be “absurdly hilarious.” Director Simon McQuoid added, “We aimed for a character with substance, not just a cartoonish comic relief. Casting Karl Urban allowed us to explore greater depth without losing the character's inherent charm.”
Damon Herriman (Better Man) takes on the role of Quan Chi, while Josh Lawson and Max Huang make a surprising comeback as Kano and Kung Lao—two characters who met their end in the first film. How is this possible? Boon pointed to the Mortal Kombat video game lore, known for its flexible approach to life and death, as the explanation: “We incorporate elements like spirits and the NetherRealm, which opens the door for deceased characters to return.”
Rounding out the cast, Tati Gabrielle (The Last of Us Season 2) appears as Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen (NCIS: Sydney) plays Queen Sindel.
