Bayonetta Celebrates 15th Anniversary

PlatinumGames Celebrates Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary with a Year-Long Fan Celebration

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta, PlatinumGames is launching a year-long celebration showcasing their appreciation for the game's enduring popularity. The iconic action title, released in Japan on October 29, 2009, and internationally in January 2010, quickly gained recognition for its innovative gameplay and stylish action, hallmarks of director Hideki Kamiya's work (known for Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe). Players embraced the powerful Umbra Witch, Bayonetta, and her unique combat style blending guns, martial arts, and magic-infused hair.

Initially published by Sega across various platforms, the Bayonetta franchise later saw its sequels become Nintendo exclusives, released on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. The prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, further expanded the lore, introducing a younger Bayonetta. The mature Bayonetta also made appearances in recent Super Smash Bros. installments.

PlatinumGames recently announced the "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year," promising a series of special announcements and events throughout 2025. While specifics remain under wraps, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.

Commemorative Items and Ongoing Celebrations

Already underway are several celebratory initiatives. Wayo Records has released a limited-edition Bayonetta music box featuring the Super Mirror design and a melody from the game's soundtrack. PlatinumGames is also providing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers, with January's release showcasing Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos under a full moon.

Bayonetta's lasting impact is undeniable. Fifteen years on, the game is still praised for its refinement of stylish action, introducing innovative mechanics like Witch Time and influencing subsequent PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming announcements throughout this special anniversary year.
