Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, has hinted that Borderlands 4's pre-order bundle—which includes a free Fortnite skin—might turn into a valuable asset, especially considering a previous Borderlands skin reportedly traded for "over $2,000 on eBay."
In a social media post, Pitchford promoted the Epic Games Store pre-order deal for the looter shooter, which grants players the Mad Moxxi skin in Fortnite. However, many users were quick to point out that "trading" skins violates Fortnite's Terms of Service and could result in an account ban.
Pitchford asked, "Is it true that the pre-order Psycho Bandit skin became one of the most sought-after Fortnite cosmetics, sometimes selling for over $2,000 on eBay? What are the chances this new bundle ends up being worth significantly more than the price of the game itself?"
To clarify, Pitchford is referencing the Psycho Bandit skin, originally released in 2019 as part of a similar Epic Games Store promotion tied to Borderlands 3. The skin also had a brief appearance in Fortnite's item shop before being removed from sale for an extended period.
During that time, the skin became a highly sought-after collectible among Fortnite enthusiasts. However, its perceived rarity and resale value dropped sharply when it became available again in April 2025, returning to wide circulation after five years off the market.
Fortnite cosmetics considered rare or unlikely to be re-released often draw considerable attention. That said, Fortnite does not support any official method for selling or trading in-game items between players. Some individuals buy or sell entire accounts that contain rare cosmetics—a practice that Epic Games explicitly prohibits under its Terms of Service and which can lead to long-term or permanent bans.
Keep all this in mind if you're thinking about purchasing Borderlands 4 just for the Fortnite skin in hopes of turning a profit. Then again, at least the game isn't priced at $80.
Borderlands 4 releases this Friday, September 12, on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled to launch on October 3.
