"Breakout Beyond Revamps Atari's Classic Game"

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to make a triumphant return with a fresh twist in "Breakout Beyond." Developed by Choice Provisions, the creators behind the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series, this new iteration maintains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways progression. Players will navigate from left to right, breaking bricks and experiencing heightened lights and effects as combos build up.

Breakout Beyond promises an exhilarating gameplay experience with special bricks that trigger stunning effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon. The game will feature 72 levels, an unlockable endless mode, and a global leaderboard for competitive play. For those who enjoy company, a local two-player co-op mode is also available.

Originally intended as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development was taken over by Atari. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed excitement about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, initially announced in 2018 with a hoped-for 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Although Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, the Amico console itself remains unreleased.

Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
