Get Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers Before Switch 2 Launches

Author : Anthony Nov 12,2025

Nintendo showcased all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct presentation, and since then, we've been anticipating the launch of preorders in the U.S. The pricing of the new console wasn't particularly shocking, but the announced cost for first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly turned heads. Notably, Mario Kart World will debut at $80. In addition, Nintendo is rolling out a new lineup of Switch 2 accessories that have seen similar price hikes compared to the original Switch. These prices have even increased further since the initial announcement.

The only Switch 2 accessory that concerned me was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a substantial $85. I already own several Switch Pro controllers and would rather avoid purchasing the updated model. Fortunately, Nintendo clarified in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will work with the Switch 2.

Where to Find Switch Pro Controllers Now

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Not the Switch 2 version. Available at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.

While many will opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it won’t be essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can continue using it and save $80 to put toward new games. For those without a Pro controller who plan to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable alternative at $69.99.

It’s possible that existing controllers could sell out before the Switch 2 arrives to make way for the new models. Amazon already faces significant stock shortages and currently only lists third-party options. Beyond compatibility with the original Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has also confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will work with the Switch 2 – though we typically recommend the Pro controller over Joy-Cons for most gaming experiences.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Released?

If you're set on getting the new Switch 2 Pro controller, you'll need to wait until the console launches. The controller will officially become available alongside the Switch 2 on June 5. Preorders for the console are expected to begin on April 24, which is likely when official accessories will also open for preorders. Keep in mind, the Switch 2 Pro controller will only be compatible with the Switch 2 and won’t function with the original Switch.

Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already appeared at Walmart and Best Buy, although no preorder date is indicated. Walmart also includes listings for Switch 2 games that will be available for preorder soon.
