The open access includes the following expansions: Forsaken (2018), Shadowkeep (2019), Beyond Light (2020), The Witch Queen (2022), Lightfall (2023), and The Final Shape (2024). The episodes—Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy—will be available until July 15.

This free access allows players to fully explore Destiny 2’s storyline and prepare for the new saga beginning with The Edge of Fate expansion, launching on July 15.
In addition to experiencing the game’s rich narrative, players can acquire exclusive items from these expansions. Any gear, currency, titles, triumphs, and cosmetics earned during the free period will remain permanently in players' inventories, regardless of whether they purchase the expansions later.
Developer Insights on The Edge of Fate
In preparation for The Edge of Fate, Bungie released a new video on July 9, where developers discussed the journey players will take on Kepler. The story focuses on Orin, the Emissary of the Nine, who breaks free from the Nine to rejoin the Guardians.
The expansion explores the lore of the Nine and the internal conflict that arises as they seek a new Emissary. Orin’s departure creates new uncertainties and sets the stage for an entirely new Destiny 2 saga.

According to the developers, “This release centers on serendipity—that magical feeling of discovering meaningful connections seemingly by chance. But here, nothing is left to chance.” They hint at a greater force operating behind the scenes, one that will significantly shape the narrative. “Great stories aren’t about events happening to characters. They’re about characters making choices that transform the world,” they added.
Gameplay-wise, the expansion introduces World Tiers, allowing players to stack challenges and earn improved rewards. Each tier increases enemy difficulty, requiring more strategic play. It also unlocks additional mysteries and pursuits on the new planet, Kepler. Higher tiers yield rarer rewards, motivating players to push their limits.

The Edge of Fate marks the start of Destiny 2’s Year of the Prophecy roadmap, which will also feature Renegades—a special collaboration with the iconic sci-fi franchise Star Wars—arriving on December 2. After more than a decade of rich content and ongoing updates, Bungie continues to deepen the lore and mechanics of this beloved online multiplayer first-person shooter.
