World of Warcraft's upcoming housing system: A contrast to Final Fantasy XIV

Blizzard has unveiled its vision for player housing in World of Warcraft: Midnight, a feature long-requested by players. The developers have explicitly contrasted their approach with the often-criticized housing system in Final Fantasy XIV.

The WoW team emphasizes accessibility, stating their goal is "A Home for Everyone." They promise housing will be available to all players without exorbitant costs, lotteries, or demanding upkeep. Furthermore, subscription lapses won't result in house repossession.

This differs significantly from Final Fantasy XIV, where limited plots, high Gil costs, lotteries, and the risk of demolition due to inactivity are common complaints. FFXIV's housing system, while fostering creativity (resulting in player-built theaters, nightclubs, and more), has also been a source of frustration for many.

WoW's housing will offer greater accessibility and shared access within a Warband. Characters from different factions can access a house purchased by a Warband member, regardless of their faction. While a Human character couldn't buy a house in a Horde zone, a Troll Warband member could, allowing the Human access.

Although limited to two housing zones, each with "Neighborhoods" of approximately 50 plots, these areas will be instanced, providing both public and private options. Public areas are dynamically generated "as needed," suggesting a less restrictive approach to plot availability compared to FFXIV.

Blizzard intends for WoW's housing to be a long-term feature, with ongoing updates and additions planned for future patches and expansions. This commitment, while subtly acknowledging the shortcomings of other MMO housing systems, suggests a learned approach to avoiding similar pitfalls.

Further details are expected this summer with the full unveiling of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
