"Mario Kart 9 Glimpse Hints at Much Stronger Nintendo Switch 2"

The recent unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 left fans buzzing, but amidst the excitement, one key detail remained shrouded in mystery: the console's technical capabilities. While new Joy-Cons, a revamped kickstand, and a larger design have been showcased, the full extent of the Switch 2's power remains undisclosed. However, a brief glimpse of Mario Kart 9 in the reveal video has sparked speculation about its potential.

In a recent YouTube video, indie developer Jerrel Dulay of Sungrand Studios, known for his work on the Wii U and 3DS, shared his insights on the matter. Dulay suggests that the new Mario Kart footage hints at a significantly more powerful console than its predecessor.

Dulay highlighted the use of "physically-based shaders" on cars and other textures in the Mario Kart footage, which allow for realistic reflections and lighting effects. According to a late 2023 report by Digital Foundry, the Switch 2 might be powered by the Nvidia T239 ARM mobile chip, boasting 1536 CUDA Cores—a 500% increase from the original Switch's Tegra X1, which had just 256 CUDA cores. This was further supported by leaks of the Switch 2's motherboard, suggesting an 8nm chip.

Dulay emphasized the complexity of using such shaders on the original Switch, noting that it often resulted in performance drops. In contrast, the new footage demonstrates additional material reflections and high-resolution ground textures, which require substantial RAM. The original Switch has 4GB of RAM, whereas the Switch 2 is rumored to come with 12GB, backed by leaks showing two SK Hynix LPDDR5 modules, each potentially offering 6GB.

The speed of these RAM modules remains unknown, but similar SK Hynix parts can run up to 7500MHz, suggesting a significant boost in efficiency and bandwidth over the original Switch's 1600MHz. This could lead to faster texture loading and the use of a higher number of unique, high-resolution textures in games like the new Mario Kart.

Dulay also pointed out the presence of "true volumetric lighting" in the trailer, which is computationally intensive. He believes this feature, along with distant shadows and real-time cloth physics on flagpoles, showcases the Switch 2's enhanced capabilities. These elements, combined with high poly-count characters and numerous onscreen textures, suggest a substantial leap in graphical power for developers transitioning from the 2017 Switch.

As we await further details and more footage from the Nintendo Switch 2, Dulay's analysis provides a compelling preview of what to expect. Nintendo has scheduled a dedicated Direct in April to reveal more about the Switch 2, and you can stay updated with all the latest news on IGN's coverage.
