Exciting news for fans of the classic board game Monopoly: Lionsgate has officially tapped John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to pen the screenplay for the upcoming Monopoly movie. This dynamic duo, known for their work on the successful film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is set to bring their unique storytelling prowess to this new adaptation.
The project will be produced by none other than Margot Robbie, under her production banner, LuckyChap. This collaboration promises to bring a fresh and engaging perspective to the iconic game, which has been a topic of cinematic interest for over a decade.
Daley and Goldstein are no strangers to the world of blockbuster films, having recently written and directed the original film Mayday. Their writing credits also include notable superhero movies such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and ability to handle diverse genres.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Early interest from acclaimed director Ridley Scott in 2007 led to script development by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski in 2011, but the project stalled. Subsequent attempts in 2015, involving Lionsgate and Hasbro with writer Andrew Niccol, and later in 2019 with actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story, also failed to materialize.
However, with Lionsgate's recent acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, the Monopoly film project has gained new momentum. Fans are hopeful that this latest iteration, guided by the creative vision of Daley, Goldstein, and Robbie, will finally pass Go and deliver a cinematic experience worthy of the beloved board game.
