MultiVersus, the 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, will soon be permanently shut down.
Player First Games announced back in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final season, confirming the game's servers would permanently close at 5pm PDT (12pm EDT) on May 30, 2025. The project was reportedly considered a significant failure for Warner Bros. Discovery, with the company acknowledging in a November 2024 earnings call that MultiVersus underperformed expectations, resulting in a $100 million writedown for its gaming division. This disappointment came after the underwhelming launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January, bringing the division's total losses to $300 million.
Just one month after this announcement, Warner Bros. canceled its planned Wonder Woman game and closed three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus developer Player First Games.
In a thread titled "Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are your final thoughts on the game?", hundreds of players shared their memories and appreciation.
"MultiVersus was a dream game - a platform fighter emphasizing fast-paced offensive action and 2v2 combat with incredible team synergy," wrote one fan. "Beyond its innovative gameplay, the voice casting was phenomenal, with many actors reprising their iconic roles (like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza voicing both Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian). The character interactions during and after matches were special too."
"While some roster choices and move sets were questionable (like Banana Guard and the Ultra Instinct-inspired Shaggy), most character designs were brilliantly creative. There will never be another game quite like MultiVersus."

"Nothing compares to playing the beta in 2022," another fan recalled. "I got completely hooked on the game's fast-paced action. When I got sick that year, I spent days playing nothing else. I'll genuinely miss it and hope for a potential sequel or revival."
"This game will always have a special place in my heart, right beside PlayStation All-Stars," one player mourned, while another shared: "Tom and Jerry's fighting style was one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences I've had in fighting games - it reignited my love for the genre."

Some fans remain cautiously optimistic about the game's legacy, though most acknowledge the reality of its closure - particularly given the licensing complexities that would complicate any revival. However, devoted players are attempting to preserve the game's memory before servers go offline.
"While MultiVersus may not have become the party game staple we expected, its fresh take on team-based platform fighting made it a standout online experience," we noted in IGN's MultiVersus review, awarding it an 8/10.
