MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus, the beloved free-to-play fighting game, is set to close its doors after its upcoming 5th Season. Dive into the details of what Season 5 holds and what you can expect once the game shuts down.

MultiVersus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season

MultiVersus' official Twitter (X) account announced on January 31, 2025, that the game will cease operations on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. In a detailed blog post on the MultiVersus official website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."

Season 5 of MultiVersus is scheduled to kick off on February 4, 2025, and will run until May 30, 2025. This season will introduce two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. According to the blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.

No official statement has been released regarding the reasons behind the decision to shut down MultiVersus.

Moving Forward With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode

After the conclusion of Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue enjoying the game "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this feature, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST until May 30 at 9 AM PDT.

Upon logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the player's PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This will enable players to keep playing MultiVersus offline with all their earned and purchased content.

As of January 31, 2025, MultiVersus has ceased real money transactions. This means that Gleamium, the game's premium currency, can no longer be bought from the online store. However, players with existing Gleamium can continue to use it to access in-game content until the end of Season 5.

MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022

MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus first opened its public beta in July 2022, offering fans a free-to-play fighting game that drew comparisons to Super Smash Bros. but aimed to stand out with its unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta saw numerous updates and two seasons of content. The game was relaunched in May 2024 with enhancements including new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more.

Despite these updates, the game struggled with ongoing technical issues, frequent disconnections, and dissatisfaction with its microtransactions. Reports from July 2024 indicated a 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.

MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, featuring 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
