Most gaming controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used with devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. However, classic vertical shooters and retro games require a different grip, akin to holding your phone as if you were scrolling through Instagram.

Max Kern's creativity led him to develop a compact USB-C gamepad tailored specifically for portrait-mode gaming, known as Tate mode. This gamepad connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

The construction of the Tate Mode mini controller involves a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed via JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max has provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.
