Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the release of its monumental update, version 2.0, scheduled for May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to reach the level of engagement Supercell hoped for. However, with this significant update, there's hope for a resurgence in player interest.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 is not just a minor update; it's a complete overhaul, essentially a reboot of the game. The changes are extensive, affecting everything from the mechanics of battles to the way victories are achieved, marking a significant shift in the game's direction.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of Heroes. Players will now select a Hero to lead their squad into battle. These Heroes are based on existing characters, and the stakes are high—if your Hero is defeated, you lose the match.
The combat system has also been revamped. Previously, players had to stop moving to engage in combat, but now, movement and fighting are seamlessly integrated, resulting in more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense battles.
The conditions for victory have shifted as well. Instead of needing to eliminate all opponents, players now only need to defeat the enemy Hero. This change has drawn comparisons to Brawl Stars, leading some to wonder if Squad Busters is veering too close to that gameplay style.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
In this major update, several modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, some skins and the original progression systems are being phased out. Supercell plans to compensate players with Hero Points and other items.

The urgency of these updates is clear. Squad Busters hasn't yet achieved the popularity of Supercell's other hits like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars. With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is making a bold move to reignite player interest. To celebrate, they're launching daily piñata events, offering players a chance to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
You can download Squad Busters 2.0 from the Google Play Store and experience all the new changes for yourself.
