Discover the latest on the potential port of Wind Waker HD to the Switch 2 and learn about the enhancements made to this classic game since its original release.
Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming to Switch 2
During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was announced that the beloved GameCube version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is set to sail to the Switch 2. This exciting news sparked curiosity among fans about the fate of Wind Waker HD on the next-gen console.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, shed light on this topic. In an episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily aired on April 9, host Tim Gettys revealed he had a conversation with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked about the possibility of a Wind Waker HD port for the Switch 2, Bihldorff responded decisively, "No, all options are on the table." This statement leaves the door wide open for the HD version to potentially make its way to the new console, although nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
First Released in 2002
Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker made a splash with its unique cel-shaded art style. A decade later, in 2013, Wind Waker HD was released on the Wii U, bringing significant enhancements. These included an upgrade to HD visuals from 480p, improved lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and various gameplay tweaks. Given that the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this beloved title.
Additionally, Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are being rebranded as Nintendo Classics. Members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon have the opportunity to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Switch 2, with more titles on the horizon. Some of these games will also feature in-game options like a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
