Nintendo Hints at New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

Author : Ethan May 24,2025

Nintendo has been dropping hints about a potential new 3D Mario game on the horizon, though we'll need to keep our eyes peeled for official announcements. During a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to fans' longing for a new mainline Mario title. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser's words suggest that eager fans might not have to wait too long for more information.

"Stay tuned," Bowser advised. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

While Bowser's comments don't amount to a solid confirmation, they offer a glimmer of hope for those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its next-generation hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and others. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was noticeably missing from the lineup.

The last major flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, was released in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch's launch. It's been nearly eight years since then, and although Donkey Kong Bananza might temporarily satisfy some fans' cravings, it's not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 many were hoping for. Considering the iconic status of Nintendo's platforming plumber within their extensive catalog, as Bowser noted, it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario game sooner rather than later.

As of now, a new mainline Mario adventure remains unannounced. While we await further updates, you can explore Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here before the console's launch on June 5, 2025. Additionally, you can dive into everything revealed during last week's Mario Kart World Direct and read our hands-on thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza.
