"Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition Excludes DLC"

As the excitement builds around the Nintendo Switch 2, fans have been grappling with the evolving pricing and additional costs associated with the console and its games, particularly in the United States. One recent revelation has added to the ongoing discussion: the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild does not include the Expansion Pass. This means that if you don't already own the DLC, you'll need to spend an extra $20 to access it on the new system.

To clarify, if you already own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the original Nintendo Switch and have purchased the Expansion Pass, you can seamlessly transfer your game and DLC to the Nintendo Switch 2 without any additional cost. However, the situation changes with the Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition of Breath of the Wild. This version offers enhanced visuals, improved performance, achievements, and integration with the new "Zelda Notes" service within the Nintendo Switch Online app. Existing Switch owners can upgrade to these features for a $10 fee.

For those who are new to Breath of the Wild and considering purchasing it for the Nintendo Switch 2, the Enhanced Edition is available for $70. This price reflects the original game's cost plus the upgrade pack. However, the DLC Expansion Pass is not included, adding another $20 to the total cost, bringing the full experience to $90.

Nintendo has confirmed this pricing structure, stating to IGN: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase."

While some might argue that this pricing is consistent with what existing owners have already paid, it's worth noting that other gaming publishers often reduce prices on older games or bundle DLC with enhanced editions for newer systems. The $90 price tag for a game that debuted in 2017 on the Wii U seems steep, especially when compared to other high-profile releases like Mario Kart World at $80, and considering the Nintendo Switch 2's anticipated $450 price point, which may increase due to tariffs.

While many fans may already own Breath of the Wild due to its widespread popularity, those waiting to experience it on the new, advanced hardware should be mindful of the additional cost for the Expansion Pass. This is particularly relevant for those also interested in its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom.
