Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Author : Chloe Feb 20,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning physics-based puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is back on Google Play, optimized for modern Android systems. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update after Apportable's closure. The game's subsequent removal from the store, due to incompatibility with current 64-bit Android devices, paved the way for this much-needed rebuild.

Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; its unique gameplay would likely thrive on platforms like TikTok.

Osmos offers a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of a time when mobile gaming felt boundless.
