Palworld Surpasses 32 Million Players Amidst Legal Battle with Nintendo

Author : Nicholas Feb 25,2025

Palworld, the crafting and survival game dubbed "Pokémon with guns," has achieved remarkable success since its January 2024 early access launch, boasting over 32 million players across Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Developer Pocketpair expressed gratitude for this overwhelming support, promising continued efforts to enhance Palworld in its second year.

The game's initial release, priced at $30 on Steam and included in Xbox Game Pass, shattered sales and concurrent player records. This success led to significant financial gains, reportedly exceeding Pocketpair's capacity to manage, according to CEO Takuro Mizobe. Capitalizing on this momentum, Pocketpair partnered with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment, aiming to expand the IP and further develop the franchise. The PS5 release was a direct result of this strategic move.

However, Palworld's meteoric rise has also brought legal challenges. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company initiated a patent infringement lawsuit, seeking 5 million yen (approximately $32,846) each in damages, plus legal fees, and an injunction halting Palworld's distribution. The lawsuit centers around three Japanese patents related to the mechanic of capturing creatures in a virtual field—a gameplay element shared by Palworld's "Pal Sphere" system and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. While Pocketpair has confirmed the patents in question and recently altered the Pal summoning mechanic, the exact reasons for this change remain unclear.

Patent law experts view the lawsuit as a testament to the significant threat Palworld poses to the established Pokémon franchise. The outcome of the legal battle, should it proceed to trial, remains uncertain. Despite the ongoing litigation, Pocketpair remains committed to defending its position in court and continues to release substantial updates for Palworld, including notable crossovers with other popular games like Terraria. The company's unwavering dedication to its player base and its ambitious expansion plans demonstrate its resilience in the face of legal adversity.
