Zelda: Wind Waker HD Hopes Alive Amid Switch 2 GameCube Push

Author : Audrey May 15,2025

The excitement around The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 through the GameCube library has sparked discussions about the possibility of a full port. According to Nate Bihldorff, senior vice president of product development at Nintendo of America, the availability of a game on Nintendo Switch Online does not preclude the possibility of a remaster or remake. In a conversation with Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys, Bihldorff emphasized that all options remain open for fan-favorite titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, which have yet to be ported to the Nintendo Switch or the Switch 2.

Some fans had expressed concerns that with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker set to be available on Nintendo Switch Online upon the Nintendo Switch 2's release on June 5, a full remaster might never happen. However, Bihldorff reassured fans that the presence of a game on the online service does not rule out other possibilities. He highlighted that numerous games available on Nintendo Switch Online have also been released in different formats, such as remakes or ports, indicating that Nintendo keeps all avenues open.

The recent Nintendo Direct presentation revealed that GameCube titles are being added to the Nintendo Switch Online premium library, bringing classics like F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to subscribers this summer. The library is set to expand further with titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness slated for future inclusion.

Amidst this news, the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date faced delays in the United States due to import tariffs, a situation that also affected Nintendo Canada. For more updates, you can explore everything announced at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct.
