Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a pivotal evolution in the world of card games, standing as the third major iteration in the development of the classic Bridge card game. Emerging from its predecessor, Straight Bridge (also known as Bridge Whist), Auction Bridge and IB paved the way for the eventual creation of Contract Bridge. Its roots trace back further still to the timeless game of Whist.
Distinct from Contract Bridge, Auction Bridge and IB introduce a unique approach to trick scoring, bonus scoring, and penalty scoring. Unlike its successor, this version lacks the concept of vulnerability—a crucial element in Contract Bridge strategy. However, the process of selecting trumps remains largely similar, though Contract Bridge introduces additional complexity in this aspect.
In Auction Bridge and IB, the dealer initiates the trump selection and must commit to winning at least the odd-numbered trick in either a trump suit or No-trumps. Bids escalate based on the total point value rather than the number of tricks, with examples such as 3 Spades (27 points) triumphing over 4 Clubs (24 points).
Scoring beyond the initial six tricks awards points as follows:
- No-trumps: 10 points
- Spades: 9 points
- Hearts: 8 points
- Diamonds: 7 points
- Clubs: 6 points
Reaching a game requires accumulating 30 points.
