The Hang is a captivating musical instrument classified as an idiophone, originating from the innovative workshops of Switzerland. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Hang consists of two half-shells made from deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheets, which are expertly glued together at the rim. This construction results in a hollow interior and a unique 'UFO shape' that is instantly recognizable. The upper surface, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' all skillfully hammered into place. The lower surface, or "Gu," is characterized by a plain design with a central rolled hole that produces a tuned note when the rim is struck. This instrument is also referred to as a handpan.
Operating on similar physical principles as the steelpan, the Hang has been ingeniously modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development is the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and various other instruments, reflecting a deep understanding of acoustics and sound production.
