Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 Dev Denies Live Service Rumors Amid 'FOMO' Event Backlash

The developers and publishers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, have clarified that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" following backlash to community events perceived as promoting "FOMO," or the fear of missing out. FOMO is a strategy often employed by live service games to spur immediate player engagement and spending on time-limited virtual items, suggesting that missing the opportunity could result in permanent loss.

This tactic has been criticized for fostering an unhealthy relationship between games and their communities. A 2021 study commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted how games use psychological tactics, like FOMO, to encourage purchases of loot boxes. Although Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, its introduction of community events to unlock exclusive cosmetics has sparked concerns and led some to label the game as moving towards a live service model.

In response to the community's feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged the "cold feedback" and the concerns about FOMO. They assured players that items available during these events would be reintroduced later, accessible to all players. The statement emphasized their goal to allow dedicated players early access to items without causing frustration or stress. They also apologized for the current cumbersome process of unlocking items and promised to simplify it.

To show their commitment to the community, Focus Entertainment is offering the emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, which ends on March 3, and was initially exclusive to those who achieved specific in-game victories.

Space Marine 2 players are eagerly awaiting the upcoming 7.0 update, which will introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Last month, Focus and Saber addressed concerns about content updates and outlined their roadmap for the game's future.

Since its record-breaking launch late last year, Space Marine 2 has sold 5 million copies, making it the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
