The 1954 issue Crime SuspenStories #22 remains arguably the most notorious horror comic ever printed. While the title may not be familiar, its shocking cover image - featuring a man brandishing an ax while clutching his wife's decapitated head - became instantly iconic. This controversial comic played a pivotal role in triggering the 1950s anti-comics movement, leading to the Comics Code Authority's creation and ultimately contributing to EC Comics' downfall.
After decades in publishing limbo, EC Comics has remarkably returned as an imprint under Oni Press. The latest release fittingly honors Johnny Craig's infamous cover artwork. IGN exclusively reveals artist Jay Stephens' homage cover for Catacomb of Torment #1, part of an ongoing EC tribute series.

Catacomb of Torment spearheads EC's "Summer of Fear" initiative - a horror anthology featuring contributions from renowned creators including John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, and David Lapham. The lineup also introduces Blood Type by Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino, plus Cruel Universe 2 from J. Holtham and Greg Smallwood.
"Our EC revival has become Oni Press' most successful line in nearly 30 years," stated Oni Press President Hunter Gorinson. "After exceeding expectations with last year's titles, we're pushing boundaries further with more daring, visceral storytelling during EC's second year of resurrection."
"Collaborating on EC has been creatively electrifying," added Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn. "We're thrilled to continue these classic morality tales with industry-leading talent, especially this summer's terrifying new offerings."
The horror revival begins with Blood Type #1's June 2025 release. Explore preview images below featuring both Blood Type and Catacomb of Torment:
