The goal behind the development of DOOM: The Dark Ages is to ensure it reaches as broad an audience as possible. Compared to previous projects from id Software, this latest installment will feature significantly more customization options. According to executive producer Marty Stratton, the studio aimed to make the game accessible to everyone. Players will have the ability to adjust various elements, including enemy difficulty and damage, projectile speed, the amount of damage they receive, and other aspects such as game tempo, aggression level, and parry timing.

Stratton also assured fans that the storylines of DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM: Eternal are designed to be understandable even without having played DOOM: The Dark Ages first.
