Actress Alix Wilton Regan, known for her role in the Dragon Age series, has shared her personal perspective on the controversy surrounding last year's Dragon Age: The Veilguard. She believes the "mixed reception" stemmed from individuals who "wanted the game to fail, or wanted to see [BioWare] fail."
The performer, who voices the Female Inquisitor in both Dragon Age: Inquisition and the recent Dragon Age: The Veilguard, expressed to IGN that she felt "absolutely devastated" witnessing BioWare's latest title struggle to attract a wider audience, even though it received generally favorable reviews from critics.
In a new interview reflecting on her various memorable video game roles—including her part in Microsoft's upcoming Perfect Dark reboot—Wilton Regan mentioned she cherished her time portraying BioWare's Inquisitor, but suspects the character is unlikely to make a return.
"I feel incredibly disheartened for BioWare as a studio that they faced such a divided response to the game," Wilton Regan commented regarding The Veilguard's reception. "From my perspective, it was a very solid game. It felt like classic BioWare through and through.
"I also believe a segment of the audience seemed eager for it to fail, or for BioWare itself to falter, perhaps because they are simply toxic voices online—a group that unfortunately includes many people, as we've come to realize."
Upon its release, The Veilguard was targeted by coordinated review bombing. Much of the criticism labeling the game as "woke" focused on its introduction of a non-binary companion and the option for players to create a transgender protagonist. On Steam, Dragon Age: The Veilguard currently holds a 'Mixed' user review status, with community-generated tags frequently highlighting "LGBTQ+" themes and "political" content.
"People were condemning the game before it even launched," Wilton Regan continued. "It's a completely unreasonable approach. How can you possibly form a definitive opinion on a game, a book, a film, or any piece of media before experiencing the final product? It's an illogical position to take."

In January, publisher Electronic Arts stated that Dragon Age: The Veilguard's sales fell approximately 50% short of internal projections. This announcement came shortly after the game's director, Corrine Busche, confirmed her departure from the company. Additionally, several BioWare team members who contributed to the project were let go.
That same month, BioWare indicated it had rolled out its last planned update for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with no further content currently in development or anticipated.
"My sincerest hope is for everyone at BioWare to find success, because I truly admire them," Wilton Regan concluded. "Regardless of their future endeavors, I am confident their exceptional skills will be recognized. We are fortunate to know we can look forward to more outstanding work from them down the line."
A restructured BioWare is now focused on the next Mass Effect installment, which currently does not have a public release window.
