Heroes of Newerth Returns: Beloved MOBA Revived

Summary

  • Following its 2022 closure, the developer of Heroes of Newerth has hinted at a possible return via social media.
  • Recent Twitter activity from the developer has sparked fan speculation about a Heroes of Newerth revival.
  • Significant player interest in a potential Heroes of Newerth comeback persists.

The classic MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, unexpectedly shut down in 2022, may be poised for a return. While unconfirmed, the developer's renewed activity on Heroes of Newerth's social media channels—dormant for over three years—suggests a potential announcement is brewing, reigniting anticipation for this League of Legends and Dota 2 competitor.

The success of the Warcraft 3 mod, Dota, spurred numerous studios to create their own Dota-inspired games. The engaging concept of two teams battling to destroy each other's base quickly captivated gamers. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth emerged as prominent MOBAs in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth ultimately couldn't maintain its competitive edge, leading to its server closure in 2022. However, recent developments hint at a possible resurgence.

Personally, in MOBAs, I gravitate towards the top/off-lane bruiser role. In League of Legends, Aatrox and Mordekaiser are favorites; in Dota 2, I typically choose Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter. If this role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, though I prefer ranged carry over mid or support.

The first indication of a possible Heroes of Newerth revival came from a recent social media post. The official Twitter account's last post, in December 2021, announced the game's permanent closure. After a three-year hiatus, a "Happy NEW Year" message (with "NEW" capitalized) appeared on January 1st. Furthermore, subtle changes to the Heroes of Newerth website now display a silhouetted logo with surrounding particles.

Heroes of Newerth's Social Media Activity Signals Potential Comeback

This wasn't a singular event; it immediately captured player attention. Nostalgia flooded in, with many speculating about a potential return, expressing sentiments like, "Don't give me hope." Adding fuel to the fire, a picture of a large cracking egg was posted on January 6th, further intensifying speculation. Theories range from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to the development of a mobile version.

The renewed social media activity surrounding Heroes of Newerth has undeniably generated excitement and demonstrates the enduring player interest. The developer's intentions remain unclear, but if the ongoing speculation proves accurate, it will be fascinating to see how Heroes of Newerth fares against today's leading MOBAs.
