Kojima Fans Notice Echoes of MGS2 in Death Stranding 2 Box Art

Author : Hannah May 07,2025

The recent trailer release for *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* has not only provided fans with a release date, collector's edition details, and box art but also sparked discussions about a nostalgic connection to director Hideo Kojima's past work, *Metal Gear Solid 2*. The box art for *Death Stranding 2* features Sam "Porter" Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, cradling the child "Lou," a familiar sight to those who played the first game. Reddit user ReverseTheFlash highlighted this connection, showcasing the box art next to a *Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty* slipcase, which portrays Japanese singer Gackt holding a child in a strikingly similar pose.

While the compositions aren't identical, the resemblance is undeniable and has delighted fans. This nod to *Metal Gear Solid 2* serves as a reminder of the intriguing promotional materials that surrounded the game's release, including Gackt's involvement in various promos and special slip-covers that have become collectible curiosities over the years.

Hideo Kojima himself explained Gackt's role in the *Metal Gear Solid 2* campaign in 2013, citing a thematic connection: "MGS1 was about DNA & 'MGS2' MEME. DNA consists 'AGTC', adding 'K' of KOJIMA becomes 'GACKT.'" This clever play on words underscores Kojima's creative approach to marketing and storytelling.

Given the noticeable *Metal Gear* influences in the new *Death Stranding 2* trailer, it's no wonder fans are connecting the dots. While these similarities might simply reflect recurring themes in Kojima's work, they certainly fuel enjoyable speculation and nostalgic trips down memory lane, especially when considering the iconic image of Gackt.

*Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* is set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5, promising more of Kojima's signature storytelling and innovative gameplay.
