Nintendo has announced three new features coming to Nintendo 64 games through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, though only one will be available on the original Switch hardware.
The upcoming enhancements include customizable controls, gameplay rewind functionality, and a CRT screen filter - with the latter two being exclusive to the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

While control customization arrives for both systems, the rewind capability and CRT filter will launch exclusively with the Switch 2 on June 5. This limitation has disappointed some current Switch owners, with social media reactions ranging from playful sarcasm to genuine confusion about the technical restrictions.

Nintendo demonstrated these features using classic titles: Super Mario 64 and Mario Golf highlighted the rewind capability, Kirby 64 displayed the CRT television simulation, and Star Fox 64 showed the customizable control schemes - the only feature currently working on original Switch hardware.

As anticipation builds for the Switch 2's June 5 launch, Nintendo has prepared its infrastructure by updating the Switch Online app to match the next-gen version. Reports emerged of an early console acquisition, though Nintendo quickly intervened - the unit remains non-functional without its day-one update.
Recent coverage includes hands-on experience with Mario Kart World plus emerging details about backward compatibility enhancements, VRR implementation specifics, and the phone number verification requirement for GameChat. Despite rapid sellouts during last month's pre-order window, Nintendo America's president assures adequate holiday season supply.
