The future of *The Last of Us* as a video game series appears to be coming to a close, according to recent statements from Naughty Dog’s leadership. Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, addressed the possibility of a third mainline entry in the franchise during a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety. When asked about a potential sequel following *The Last of Us Part II*, Druckmann responded, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.” His comments suggest that Naughty Dog may not continue the iconic zombie survival saga beyond its current installments.
Druckmann has previously spoken about his approach to sequels and creative development. During the DICE Summit 2025, he told IGN that thinking too far ahead can hinder the quality of the current project. He explained, “I think you're jinxing yourself if you're starting to think about the sequel when you're working on the first game… I'm not saving some idea for the future. If there's a cool idea, I'm doing my best to get it into here.” Given this philosophy and the conclusive tone of *The Last of Us Part II*, fans should consider the game as potentially the final chapter in Joel and Ellie’s story.
Naughty Dog Shifts Focus To New IP
While the *The Last of Us* gaming series might be at an end, Naughty Dog is hard at work on a brand-new intellectual property. At The Game Awards 2024, the studio officially announced *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*, a sci-fi narrative-driven title confirmed for PlayStation 5. Although no gameplay footage has been released beyond a teaser trailer, Naughty Dog’s official website states the project has been in development since 2020 and promises to be their most ambitious and imaginative story yet.
The Cancellation of The Last of Us Online
The cancellation of *The Last of Us Online* was a strategic move made to allow Naughty Dog to focus on single-player experiences like *Intergalactic*. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida revealed on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast (February 19, 2025) that Naughty Dog initially wanted to develop the online title but ultimately stepped back after advice from Bungie, creators of *Destiny*. Yoshida noted that Bungie warned Sony executives about the long-term commitments required for live-service games, leading Naughty Dog to realize they couldn’t handle both projects simultaneously.
With the combination of Druckmann’s remarks and the cancellation of *The Last of Us Online*, it seems Naughty Dog is shifting away from the franchise—for now. However, fans still have something to look forward to: *The Last of Us Part II Remastered* will launch on PC on April 3, 2025, offering enhanced visuals and performance for PC gamers.
