Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's highly anticipated launch next month. The latest video, shared via the Nintendo Today app, showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which includes slots designed to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously known, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, allowing the new console to play games from both generations with just one cartridge slot. However, there's a striking difference: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a choice that appears to be consistent across all titles, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. For those without the Nintendo Today app, the video is also available on X/Twitter, courtesy of OatmealDome.
The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker now sports the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch design. The carrying case itself is designed to accommodate the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, along with six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps.
Despite the color change, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors in every other aspect, including the infamous foul-tasting coating that Nintendo applies to prevent accidental ingestion. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
