Nintendo has rolled out a significant firmware update for the original Switch console, paving the way for the upcoming Switch 2 launch.
The new Nintendo Switch Firmware Update 20.0.0 introduces several crucial enhancements to the aging console, as detailed in patch notes published on Nintendo's official site. These changes prepare the system for its successor's imminent June debut.
Most notably, the update adds a dedicated system transfer feature to Switch 2, accessible through System Settings. This allows seamless migration between consoles via local wireless communication.
For users who won't have simultaneous access to both consoles, Nintendo provides an alternative: uploading transfer data to secure servers for later retrieval on Switch 2.
Important note: initiating this transfer will completely wipe your original Switch. Nintendo advises only completing this process if you're ready to immediately set up your Switch 2. For others, waiting to perform a local transfer is recommended.
The update has sparked discussion among fans. Some plan to use this feature when upgrading, appreciating they won't need both consoles simultaneously. Others express concerns about mandatory factory resets and potential data loss during server transfers.
Visual upgrades include redesigned user icons, with Donkey Kong sporting a fresh look inspired by upcoming Switch 2 exclusives: Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.

All these changes culminate in the much-anticipated June 5 Switch 2 launch. Pre-orders began April 24 at $449.99, selling out rapidly as expected. Nintendo has notified U.S. My Nintendo Store customers that high demand may delay some launch day deliveries.
