The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge

The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles the Realmgate and is found near the starting area of your mapping journey. Accessing it, however, presents a significant challenge.

Unlocking the Burning Monolith

The Burning Monolith is the lair of the endgame pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. Your first attempt to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, requiring three Crisis Fragments. These fragments are obtained by conquering three Citadels: the Iron Citadel (Ezomyte Infiltration), Copper Citadel (Faridun Foray), and Stone Citadel (Vaal Incursion). Once you possess all three fragments, activate the altar within the Burning Monolith to begin the Arbiter of Ash encounter.

Prepare for a formidable foe! The Arbiter of Ash is the game's most powerful pinnacle boss, boasting devastating attacks and millions of hit points. Ensure your character build is optimized before engaging.

Locating the Elusive Citadels

Path of Exile 2 features three Citadels: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel houses a unique map boss, and defeating them yields a corresponding Crisis Fragment. The primary difficulty lies in locating these Citadels.

Citadel attempts are single-use only.

The Atlas is procedurally generated, making Citadel locations unpredictable. While community theories exist, they are largely based on observation and experience:

  1. Directional Progression: Choose a direction on the Atlas and explore systematically until you discover a Citadel. Utilizing Towers provides a broader map overview.
  2. Corruption Focus: Scan the Atlas edges for corrupted nodes. Prioritize these nodes, clearing them successfully, unlocking nearby Towers, and repeating the process. This strategy complements the first.
  3. Clustered Appearance: Citadels often appear in close proximity. Discovering one increases the likelihood of finding others nearby.

Citadel hunting is a time-intensive endgame activity. It's best undertaken when your character build is fully optimized, and boss encounters are routine.

Alternatively, Crisis Fragments can be purchased from online trading platforms or the in-game Currency Exchange. Due to their rarity, they command a high price, but this might be a worthwhile investment to bypass the arduous hunt.
