This is a setback for Ubisoft, which has encountered numerous challenges with Assassin’s Creed Shadows since its announcement. Earlier this month, Ubisoft emphasized that preorders for the game remain robust despite a rocky development and promotional phase.
In its latest financial report, the struggling publisher noted that "preorders for the game are performing strongly, comparable to those of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the franchise’s second most successful title."
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed optimism, stating, “Initial feedback has been encouraging, highlighting the game’s compelling narrative and immersive world, with both protagonists driving the storyline and the high-quality, complementary gameplay offered by the dual protagonist approach.”
“I want to acknowledge the remarkable talent and commitment of the entire Assassin’s Creed team, working diligently to make Shadows the franchise’s most ambitious entry to date,” he added.
Assassin's Creed Shadows was initially slated for November, then delayed to February 14, before being pushed to its current March 20 release date.
The game carries high expectations as the long-awaited Japan-set chapter and the first major Assassin’s Creed title since 2020. Ubisoft, facing recent setbacks and investor pressure, urgently needs it to succeed.
The promotional period has been turbulent, with the development team issuing apologies for inaccuracies in the game’s portrayal of Japan and unauthorized use of a historical recreation group’s flag.
Further controversy arose when collectible figure maker PureArts withdrew an Assassin’s Creed Shadows statue from sale due to its “insensitive” design.
