Like a Dragon: Stranger Than Heaven Announced

Author : Thomas Mar 16,2026

At Summer Game Fest, Ryu Ga Gotoku's intriguing alternate-history action game, previously known as Project Century, received a fresh trailer packed with new details—along with plenty of fresh questions—and an official new title: Stranger Than Heaven.

First unveiled as Project Century during The Game Awards last December, Stranger Than Heaven initially left fans guessing about its true nature. We know it’s being developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the creators of the Yakuza series, and that its combat bears a resemblance to the studio's signature brawling style—though clearly refined. Menus are sleeker, the action is more visceral and brutal, and the moral choice to “Show Mercy” or “Show No Mercy” introduces a level of stakes not typically seen in Yakuza.

While the latest trailer sheds a bit more light on the game, it also deepens the mystery. The initial Project Century trailer was set in 1915 Japan, but this one appears to take place in 1943. Why two distinct time periods? Does the game involve time travel, or is it simply using an elaborate flashback or time jump? And where exactly in Japan is this unfolding? Could that bridge mean we’re in Sotenbori? Or Kamurocho? Or an entirely new location?

Adding to the intrigue, both trailers merge traditional Japanese aesthetics with classic Americana—as if different eras and cultures have collided in an alternate reality. This visual clash is present across both revealed time periods. While it's evident the game is set in Japan, the exact nature of its alternate history remains unclear. Fans are already speculating, and theories are sure to multiply following this new glimpse.

We also got the name of at least one character: Mako Daito. He appears to be the protagonist, but given the twists so far, can we be sure? With striking blue eyes and a cryptic line of dialogue hinting at something unusual about him, his role is still shrouded in mystery. And after last year's curious tease, there’s even speculation that Snoop Dogg might appear—certainly an unexpected casting choice.
